PRE-INTERNSHIP
Going back in time to 2019, I just got into the University to study Computer Engineering. Why Engineering, you say? I initially wanted to be a programmer, that’s all that was in my mind that time. I didn’t know that Computer Engineering wasn’t just about programming, in fact, programming was the least of it. It included so many other boring “important” stuffs that I wasn’t good at. Computer Science was the better option for that. So here I am, after making a major career mistake and wondering how to move forward. I decided I was going to learn it on my own, but I couldn’t after 3 whole years of YouTube and practice.
I then decided to go back to my roots, as a kid I always loved to draw, I practically started drawing before I wrote the alphabets ( Just exaggerating here… I’m not that talented please…but you get my point), and so I decided to rekindle my growing skills and even surpass it. I learnt how I always liked to learn ( YouTube, practice, not like I liked that method, I was just too broke to buy courses, maybe I’d be a guru by now…oh well). I saw much improvements especially in anatomy, of which I struggled a lot in the beginning.
INTERSHIP
Fast forward to today, after tons and tons of applications for multiple roles (2d artist, illustrator, concept artist, freelance artist, intern artist) in multiple companies ( Indian companies, small art studios, Ubisoft, Blizzard, Gameloft, Nickelodeon f**k…even Disney), I finally landed an internship role at Leti Arts, Accra Ghana and all it took was just one referral from my friend, compared to the numerous job applications. This is the importance of networking.
My time at Leti Arts has been amazing so far. Shout out to the amazing Abigail Selasi, our project manager, the onboarding process was so smooth and fun. Loved the games. We were grouped into teams to make games within a month. My team and I have made a lot of progress. There’s a lot of work for the art side like character sketches, turnarounds, renders, etc. same for environments and props. I really enjoy working here, obviously because I’m doing what I’ve always loved, but also because of the people around me, lots of talented, brilliant and fun guys.
POST INTERNSHIP
The goal for now is to work hard enough to be employed as a full time staff after my three months internship program. I’m excited, this is all so amazing. Don’t give up on your dreams guys, just start. You can’t know where every path leads, just let your dreams guide your every step.
