Rethinking How Math is Taught in Ghanaian Schools
When you hear the word "math," what comes to mind?
For many of us, it brings flashbacks of chalkboards, long division drills, and trying to memorize formulas we barely understood. Math, though essential, hasn’t always had the best PR. But what if the way we teach math was the real problem, not the subject itself?
We at Leti Arts had an energizing conversation with the team from Adinkra Math. Their mission? To make math feel different. Accessible. Relatable. Fun. And their approach sparked something in us: a thought that maybe it’s time to redesign how math is experienced in Ghanaian classrooms.
Let’s face it, as kids, we weren’t just struggling with numbers, we were struggling with engagement. Imagine if instead of cramming equations, we had math challenges wrapped in stories. Missions where you need to solve problems to unlock levels. Characters who explain concepts as part of the adventure. That’s what gamified learning offers. And guess what? Kids today can actually have that.
Gamifying math isn’t just about making it fun; it’s about making it click. Children learn best when they interact, when they’re challenged, when they feel rewarded. We believe digital games can turn abstract math into something tangible, visual, and memorable.
While we aren’t building a math game yet, this conversation with Adinkra Math got us thinking. What does the future look like when educators and game developers join forces?
What kind of learners would we nurture if problem-solving became play?
Here’s what we took away from this exchange:
• The problem isn’t math; it’s how we teach it. • Gamification can make math more interactive, visual, and rewarding. • Kids learn better when they play. Period. • Digital education tools have the power to change learning culture in Ghana.
Stay with us as we explore more of these conversations. Because maybe the future of learning isn’t in the textbooks, it’s in the games.
